How many people reading this are dog lovers? Did any of you catch that episode of Dogs 101 where they were talking about the English toy spaniel? I saw it on Animal Planet right after a commercial for Energy Savings and the minute I saw those frilly ears and that mournful puppy dog face, I fell in love.

The allure of the English toy spaniel is in the quiet elegance of the breed which obscures the underlying qualities of a great tracker and a loyal friend. Their ears are the most recognizable feature on a spaniel – long, soft and flowing – but they also require the most work in order to avoid infection. The coat on the spaniel is also surprisingly robust, but it’s no surprise when you consider the fact that these dogs were meant to hunt.

Water is absolutely no problem for this breed and, if you find yourself adopting one of your own, you might find it harder to keep him or her out of the water. And their compact size makes them perfect for traveling to the ideal hunting grounds to hunt small fowl. Just make sure you give them enough exercise and train them regularly to avoid territorial behavior.

The respected title of Best in Breed at the Westminster Kennel Dog Show for 2011 was captured by Kolrassa Krokridandi (AKA “Rassie”), an Eyjahunda Icelandic Sheepdog. This breed is new to the competition this year along with five other breeds: the Boykin Spaniel, Bluetick Coonhound, Redbone Coonhound, Cane Corso, and Leonberger.
As Iceland’s only native breed, the Icelandic Sheepdog is a very rare animal having survived near extinction early in its history due to a plague and canine distemper. Originally brought to Iceland by the Vikings in 880AD, the Icelandic Sheepdog is an exceptional herder and is often used as a guard dog due to their keen senses. This breed is also well known for its excellent temperament and unwavering loyalty to their family.
Rassie, owned by Donna McDermott, hails from Dragonfly Farm in Seattle, Washington. At the end of 2010, she earned her AKC Grand Champion title. This is only the second Champion title that has been awarded by the AKC for her breed. Handled by Tammie Wilcox, this four-year-old Westminster rookie made it all the way to the Best in Show competition where her trip sadly ended, having lost the title to a Bearded Collie named Mr. Baggins.

Many people believe that most breeds of dogs can be fed basically the same all-purpose dog food, but the truth is that those who want their pets to be at their healthiest should consider their pet’s breed when deciding on a diet. Every breed of dog has its own unique nutritional requirements, and English toy spaniels are no different.

The English toy spaniel is a breed of small dog that first became popular in England just prior to the reign of King Edward VII. It is closely related to the English Cocker spaniel and therefore shares many of its nutritional requirements. The native food supplies of both breeds most likely consisted of starchy vegetables such as potatoes, poultry and mutton. Breeders and nutritionists recommend that owners feed their toy spaniels foods containing poultry, lamb, potato, oats and whey. Commercial foods containing all of these ingredients are readily available at most pet, grocery and department stores. It is also recommended that toy spaniels stay away from soy products, ocean fish, beef and corn.

While commercial dog foods containing the right ingredients are usually acceptable, many breeders and canine nutritionists recommend that toy spaniels be fed meals that are prepared at home for the best possible diet.

You may be wondering what is the difference between an English Toy Spaniel and an English Spaniel. The differences between the breeds are very noticeable.
The English Toy Spaniel, as the name states, is a small dog classified in the Toy group by the American Kennel Club. English Toy Spaniels weigh from 9 to 12 pounds and stand from 9 to 10 inches in height. These dogs are indoor dogs that are designed as companions and not field dogs.
On the other hand, the two breeds referred to as the English Spaniel are quite the opposite of the English Toy Spaniel. For instance, the English Cocker Spaniel is a companion, but it is also used as a field hunting dog. This breed can be up to 17 inches high and weigh well over 30 pounds. They require a great deal of outdoor exercise.
The other English Spaniel is the English Springer Spaniel. This breed is very different from the English Toy Spaniel. The English Springer is very energetic dog originally used for pheasant hunting. It stands 20 inches tall and weighs approximately 50 pounds.
As one can see, the English Toy Spaniel and the English Spaniel dogs are very different from each other in general size, appearance and purpose.

If you love a dog that you can hold, cuddle and love the English Toy Spaniel is the dog for you. They are also recognized by their European name, the King Charles Cavalier. They will give you a lot of joy and a lot of laughs. They are a very good breed of dog for senior citizens. This dog has also been described as intimate, funny and sweet.

One of the beautiful features of the English Toy Spaniel is their eyes. They are very round, large and very expressive. This dog can almost communicate with you through their eyes. If you have other animals, there will be no worries. The Toy Spaniel will make friends with all of them. He is amiable with other animals and with visitors that come to your home. You can let your Toy Spaniel play, in the fenced yard, and that will be all the exercise he will require. There is no worry about having to take your spaniel for a long walk.

It is important however, that you do not leave them home alone for to long a period of time. Your English Toy Spaniel needs a great deal of companionship. They do not like being left alone for more than a few hours. This tends to make them anxious. So if you have a lot of time and love to give, this is certainly the dog for you.
